My paymaster is Fairfax – one of the two Australian-owned media companies that dominate the print and online media market in New Zealand, and publisher of content via stuff.co.nz (the third-most viewed website in New Zealand). I spend most of my working life covering the court and justice rounds for Fairfax’s Palmerston North-based newspaper the Manawatu Standard. Immediately prior to my employment there, I managed to earn beer money by working for Wellington bar The Malthouse. None of those facts should colour my opinions, but they may. Consider yourself warned.

I do, from time to time, get sent free beer. It is a great perk. Being the ethical journalist I assume I am, I will always declare if I got something mentioned in that way. However, I doubt that situation will arise, for reasons best described by Dylan Jauslin.
